The Bechtler Art Museum will house a unique collection of modern and contemporary art assembled by Andreas Bechtler and his family during the past 75 years. The internationally renowned architect Mario Botta is designing the intimate, jewel-like building. Botta also designed the widely acclaimed San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Many of the 1200 works of art were acquired directly from the artists who were personal friends of the Bechtler family. The Collection features such artists as Braque, Degas, Ernst, Giacometti, Klee, Mir—, Picasso and Warhol.
Hans and Elizabeth Bechtler believed that art should be a part of everyday life for everyone, not just the privileged. For this reason, they transformed the daily workplace of their businesses by exhibiting pieces of art in the hallways, conference rooms, and other locations to give enjoyment to their employees.
The Bechtlers were as interested in the artists themselves as in the works they produced, leading to close friendships with some of the greatest artists of the Twentieth Century. As a result, the Collection includes volumes of anecdotal materials from the artists, such as photographs and correspondence that provide direct insights into the lives and art of the Collection's famous artists.
Visitors to the distinctly contemporary building will see art shown in ways that are both serious and fun, playful and educational. The 35,000 square foot building will include a second floor sculpture terrace, an intimate setting for artist books and small works, dramatic large-scale installations, and many, many surprises.
